A Message from Coach Thornton

Many thanks to the men who started the Rugby Club at Hampden-Sydney and to those who followed in their footsteps, playing matches wherever they could find a field, in rag tag jerseys, self-coached for many years, and with variable levels of financial support. We are in your debt for laying the foundation for our current success!

Our rugby program is the first in Virginia to be designated as a varsity club. We have a dedicated rugby pitch - a rarity in Division III - and it is the best maintained pitch in the state. As I enter my eighth season coaching rugby on the Hill, I look back at many recent triumphs. In the past three years, we have twice qualified for the Ed Lee Tournament (state championship); qualified five players for the Virginia Rugby Union All Star team; had two players selected for USA Rugby’s Academic All Stars – one of whom was also the valedictorian of Hampden-Sydney’s 2012 graduating class; and we finished our spring 2012 season 6-1, allowing just a single try in our last three matches.

We have made an incredible transformation, but there is still much to do.  In the spring on 2014, we added a storage shed adjacent to the field and a scoreboard behind the west try-line.  We would also like to finance an international tour - at least once every four years. Possibilities exist to combine academic study with international competition at University College in Dublin, Ireland and in other Commonwealth and Caribbean countries.

If you have not donated to the Rugby Club in the past, I ask that you consider making a donation this year. If you have given previously to the Club through other means, I want to thank you again and hope that you will continue to support us in the future. All funds contributed are tax deductible and will be used to support Rugby. However, if you can make a gift, please do not make it as a substitute for your Annual Fund gift, which is vitally important to support the College’s academic and non-academic needs.

Go Tigers!
