Since playing their first game in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium in 1979, the Tigers have posted an impressive 324-99 (.766) record in the Tiger Den. Surprisingly, the Tigers did not win the first game played at the facility; they dropped a 61-56 decision to St. Mary’s.
Hampden-Sydney’s longest winning streak at Fleet Gym is 32 games, starting with a 92-79 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan in the NCAA Tournament at the end of the 2001-02 season and running through the 2003-04 season before ending with a 70-62 loss to Methodist in the second game of the 2004-05 season. The team posted back-to-back undefeated seasons from 2002 through 2004, garnering a 29-0 record at home and from 1997-2004, the Tigers racked up a 99-7 (.934) record.
The 2004-05 season marked the 11th straight season Hampden-Sydney led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in attendance, averaging nearly 1,000 fans per home contest. Meanwhile, Hampden-Sydney’s home contest with Randolph-Macon, played on February 14, 2004, established a single-game attendance record with 2,214 fans in attendance.
Since 1997, Fleet Gym has been host to ten NCAATournament games where the Tigers have boasted an 8-2 record.
In the past six years, the Tiger den has seen vast improvements. Fleet Gym has gotten a new floor; new bleachers, including a home section with seat backs; a new sound system; new banners for all of the ODAC schools; and the addition of five Hampden-Sydney Championship banners from four different sports.
Remarkably, in the 31 seasons the Tigers have been playing in Fleet Gym they have only posted two losing seasons at home and have boasted a positive home record every season since the 1988-89 season. The Tigers have also managed at least 13 wins in Fleet on ten separate occasions, including two seasons with 16 home victories.
All of the Tiger victories have made Fleet one of the most feared destinations in the nation with fantastic fan support from both the College fan base and the outstanding support from the community.
In 2008-09, the Tigers averaged just shy of 1,500 fans a night in their last four home games of the year while bringing in over 10,000 spectators for the season.
